Eddie Wrevlonne – “Speed Bump”

Another memorable track from Eddie Wrevlonne, “Speed Bump” finds a lovely middle ground between dark synth-pop intrigue and vibrant emotive expression. The artist’s stirring baritone vocals combine with dreamy atmospherics for a fully immersive sound, following previously featured singles “I Have Learned” and “Say Hello to the Void for Me.” Melody, atmosphere, and structural momentum once again impress from the bedroom-pop solo project of vocalist, multi-instrumentalist, and songwriter Edward Wagner (from the projects Wrevlonne and Hearts Fail).

A seamless mixture of hazy, buzzing synth simmering and bouncy effervescence combines right away with moody vocal prowess, its “one time” reminiscing and “I hit a speed bump in the road” recollections capture the unique moments within a relationship — which may seem understated at the time, though linger on for their own particular reasons following heartbreak. The added dream-pop illumination in the “we were innocent divine” section — with the ensuing piano-touched lightness — also thoroughly compels. Moody and melodic, “Speed Bump” is a surefire success.

This and other tracks featured this month can be streamed on the updating Obscure Sound’s ‘Emerging Singles’ Spotify playlist.
