Maria Lane – “6 feet deep”

“6 feet deep” is a stirring new track from Brooklyn-based songwriter Maria Lane, capturing the wreckage of a sudden breakup through mesmerizing dreamy vocal layers and evolving atmospherics. Co-produced with Justin Meyer, this folk-driven single navigates the wreckage of a sudden breakup through hauntingly cinematic arrangements. By pairing Radiohead-inspired bowed guitar textures with visceral storytelling about finality, Lane transforms personal heartbreak into a memorable anthem of endurance.

Lush acoustic strums craft an absorbing initial soundscape, establishing a dreamy undercurrent amidst Lane’s escalating, emotive vocals. “I’ll grab the shovel, you say your eulogy,” Lane’s introspective vocals let out, reflected sporadically by ghostly backing vocals — chilling in its “eulogy” and “as you speak” mirroring sending chills. There’s an ominously melancholic tone in the “if you have any last words” reminder, even amidst the serene acoustic-set disposition — capturing love, loss, and grief with artful immersion.

The ensuing “going under, 6 feet deep” chorus captivates in both its gentle, twangy guitar additions and caressing vocal tones. The track is impactful in its heart-on-sleeve lyricism, vulnerable in its heartrending “why are you leaving?” questioning and subsequent “you were my friend” folk-ready mourning — the past tense being especially resonant. “I don’t know how to let you go,” Lane’s vocals continue, the admission enthralling into a lovely outro, with steady acoustic strums, hints of harmonica, and a reverbed spoken-word sample. “6 feet deep” is a moving, standout piece of songwriting from Maria Lane.
