RIMENY + Paperwhite – “Hyperlight”

A delightful new track melding hyperpop and alt-pop spiritedness, “Hyperlight” is a fantastic collaborative single from RIMENY and NYC-based dream-pop duo Paperwhite. Spacey, lush synths build into gentle rhythmic pulses and a heart-on-sleeve vocal admission: “I could’ve known you, but I never let you in.” Themes of loss and lonesomeness coexist in these verses, reaching a sort of cathartic self-realization in the replay-tempting “I know who I am, a man who had and lost you” hook.

Repeated references to nighttime and “tonight” further a neon-lit, nocturnal appeal — where the dreamy synth and prancing piano work intertwine with especially contagious allure into the finale. Prior to that, bursts of synths pair with Blade Runner imagery, though more romantic: “We could be the last lovers / in the city on a drift mission / catching transmission on a walkie.” Visions of close-knit midnight drives together, as an antidote to nightly loneliness, combine with an exceptionally catchy alt-pop production for a thorough success from RIMENY and Paperwhite.

This and other tracks featured this month can be streamed on the updating Obscure Sound’s ‘Emerging Singles’ Spotify playlist.
