A recent double-single release showcases the melodic, smoothly absorbing sound of The Enigmatic Foe, the musical project of Knoxville-based songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Jared Colinger.
“Lover…Lover” enamors in its breezy guitar jangles and soulful vocals, yearning for a moment “just to process what you said.” The aesthetic reminds fondly of The Style Council in its expressive vocal tone and guitar shimmers alongside a bouncy rhythm section. The falsetto “to you” vocal segment is especially fulfilling, venturing into a title-touting, string-laden allure and subsequent brass-ready entrancement. “Lover…Lover” is a gem of a production, full of emotion and brass-laden soulful pop.
Similarly enchanting, “Replaced” casts a moodier spell. “There’s nothing here for you,” Colinger’s vocals let out, lamenting a state of tumult within a relationship, reaching a point where “now I don’t mind if you don’t call” — representing the action of being replaced. Jangly guitars and melodic vocals consume here as well, pleading to “move on” with buzzy, moody rock and pop intertwining. Both “Lover…Lover” / “Replaced” and excellent pieces of songwriting.
