Producer The FloodShark navigates a digital ocean on the autobiographical EP LoveShark. Born in West Palm Beach and currently based in Colombia, the artist blends plunderphonics with ambient Western classical influences, hip-hop, and ambient intrigue. The 20-minute EP functions as a sonic sea adventure, depicting trials and lost romance through aquatic synths and field recordings captured across South America and the Caribbean.
“Marmaid” captivates right away with its atmospheric sense of escapism. Thumping rhythms and hazy synth pads embrace an electronic aesthetic, while the marimba-laden echoes and illuminated tones lend an island-set soundscape. Bubbly aquatic sounds ease in seamlessly, furthering a world that would sound at home in Super Mario Sunshine. “Savannah Sunshine” arrives next and continues the effervescent yet serene immersion, the added ambience resembling a summer rainfall as balmy synth tones linger with ethereal weightlessness.
Another memorable track, “Todavía Mi Luz” basks in the daylight as well; bird-chirping and vibrant synth tones assemble, melding with buzzing ardor and an overall triumphant feeling. EP finale “Florida” then arrives, achieving a more nocturnal captivation in its subdued nighttime sounds — including frog-croaking and crackling thunder — and trickling synth movements. LoveShark is an EP that consistently delights in its enamoring, atmospheric pull — blissful and tropical in its artful constructions.
