Annabelle Tiffin – “Whiplash”

“Whiplash” marks an emotionally impactful single for Gold Coast artist Annabelle Tiffin. Collaborating with producer Julian Feifel, the singer-songwriter channels the introspective vulnerability of influences like Lizzy McAlpine and Phoebe Bridgers. This soulful ballad explores the bitter weight of lingering pain and the courage required to face internal hauntings. Tiffin has drawn praise for her sincere, melodic songwriting, apparent on debut “Currents” and follow-up “Motion Sickness,” which caught our ears last month with its magnetic production. Now, “Whiplash” continues to showcase her evolution as an artist with poetic voice, here confronting the power of personal perseverance within a dynamic, hooky sound.

A rousingly climactic production unveils, starting with a solemn folk-led prowess and culminating in an anthemic rock-touched outpouring, where Tiffin’s stirring vocals lament how “I try to let it go, but I don’t even know how to forget all the things I’ve been through.” Further ruminations on how the whiplash is “gone” — but a sore neck remains — artfully captures how, even after trauma passes, there are lingering remnants that impact, mentally and physically.

“Move on to prove that I’m stronger,” Tiffin’s vocals move with determined, perseverant allure during a delectably moody series of verses. Twangy guitars linger enjoyably in the back, reprising again in the “monster’s gone” catharsis — while still acknowledging that “I’m still alone inside” despite a loving support system and the acknowledgement of the traumatic event being over. Tiffin’s fiercely evolving vocals combine with an array of memorably eclectic guitar tones and heartfelt lyricism for a standout, affecting success in “Whiplash.”
