“Poor Shelter” is a resonating track from Baby Moon, Jr, representing the final track from their new EP, Portals. A gorgeous atmospheric pull shows right away, with sounds of birds chirping with lushly inviting vocal work — wordless and ethereal. Playful interactions show in the background, further resembling a day at the park in its blissful soundscape. Gentle acoustic strums enter thereafter, with the vocals meeting that outdoors-y charm as well, with lines like “the grass has gone to seed again” and “the roots of the trees are climbing in.” An organic, heartfelt fusing of rock and folk makes for a standout success of a track.
Another highlight from the EP, “The Sun King is Dead” begins with a proclamation of the titular Sun King’s death. “The moment he fell, the trees shook…” the narrative lyricism flows amidst fluttering acoustics, maintaining an enjoyable mystique in the aftermath of one’s demise, again infusing imagery of birds and the outdoors within deeply impactful introspections. “Sun King is dead, but he did not leave a note,” the vocals compel especially, ruminating on things left unsaid and the ensuing absence. Both these tracks excel, coming from an EP that’s strongly worth checking out.
