DownTown Mystic – ‘On E Street Remix’

Featuring the legendary E Street Band rhythm section of drummer Max Weinberg and bassist Garry Tallent, On E Street Remix showcases the vintage, analog-driven rock of DownTown Mystic. Blending storytelling with jangly guitars, the EP captures a “Bruceified” energy alongside the excellent songcraft of DownTown Mystic, the alter ego of artist Robert Allen, impressing last year also with the Mystic Highway EP.

A resonating rocker in “Way To Know (Remix) – Radio Exit” opens the EP, its “we have to find a way” vocal declarations pairing with rollicking, jangly guitars and an expectedly fantastic rhythm section. An especially magnetic guitar solo takes hold in the approach to the two-minute turn, with the ensuing “world keeps growing colder” observations continuing the fervent, introspective pull.

A twangier allure shows on ensuing track “And You Know Why – Remix,” building to a heartfelt vocal escalation and title-touting finality, sounding like a cross between Springsteen and Petty in its mixture of contemplative verses and a multi-layered vocal, impassioned chorus. Its “TV Mix” is also stellar, displaying an exceptional, jangly guitar warmness.

“Hard Enough (Remix) – Radio Edit” is another delight, chronicling a clear smitten sense though with one where it’s “hard enough to love her, it’s just a matter of time before you lose your mind.” The title-bearing refrain is irresistibly catchy, as is the “give you the blues” alternations between adoration and acknowledged risk-taking. On E Street Remix is a thorough triumph, exemplifying DownTown Mystic’s high-quality songwriting alongside one of the best rhythm sections in rock.

“Way To Know (Remix) – Radio Exit” and other tracks featured this month can be streamed on the updating Obscure Sound’s ‘Emerging Singles’ Spotify playlist.
