The Yum Yum Tree – ‘Turn Down the Noise’

Turn Down the Noise is a melodic, guitar-driven rock album from Atlanta-based indie rock trio The Yum Yum Tree. Embracing the infectiously nostalgic charm of ’90s college radio, the band pairs Andy Gish’s memorable vocals with songs that balance melodic power-pop energy with introspective songwriting. Throughout the project, the band explores themes of perseverance and selfless affection, grounding emotional depth in hooky, alt-rock productions.

The album’s title track opens with a peppy percussive charm, traversing seamlessly into fuzzy guitars and enveloping vocal harmonies. The ahh-ing vocal presence melds with whirring synths for a melodically captivating momentum, fusing power-pop and alt-rock energy as a suave “do what you can, pick up the slack” vocal lead emerges. “Take it back!” the vocals push with passionate allure, beckoning to “turn down the noise” as the guitars continue to crunch with replay-inducing vigor. Ensuing track “Shine” plays with an affectionate, selfless charm — inspiring one to “shine, even if you’re not mine” as twangy, hypnotic guitar layers coexist with the soaring vocal precision.

Another standout track, “My Corner” shows enjoyable range between bass-ready beginnings and fuzz-loving rock ‘n’ roll charisma. “So, you wanna leave me here, well it’s okay to give up without a fight,” the perseverant vocals push forth, encouraging to “hold on tightly” through the tumult. The album delights in its encouraging, amiable lyrical sentiments and consistently hooky rock productions. This is also evident on “Operator,” where sludgy bass beginnings develop into jangling guitar layers and an affecting “operator, won’t you take out my heart?” questioning — dazzling in its stylish, infectious build-up. Filled with hooks and personality, Turn Down the Noise is a satisfying full-length rock success from The Yum Yum Tree.
