Houston-based alt-rock quartet Zegovia showcases both high-octane punk energy and hooky power-pop/alternative synergy on recent single “Above the Roof & In the Tree.” Fronted by Seth Mireles, the band explored the darker corners of the human condition with fearless honesty across last year’s debut album, Observe. “Above the Roof & In the Tree” is a fantastic follow-up, marking the band’s first output of 2026.
Dexterous guitars and equally energetic percussion kick the track into an invigorating gear. The ferocity and infectiousness don’t let up throughout. “Above the roof, and in the tree, hanging there, with me!” the vocals launch forth, preceded by a mixture of sturdy distortion and twangy blares. A more intensified vocal vigor unveils in the “you sold yourself for spite” sequence; the vocals in general stir with their shifts between more introspective tones and shout-y passion. “I feel like, I feel like,” they continue into a peppy central hook, culminating in a fierce “you!” punctuation.
The rhythm section scales back momentarily around the two-minute turn, re-emerging with satiating power along with the vocals, which through multiple layers admit “I feel like I am losing to myself.” Ooh-ing harmonies follow, while the sweltering guitar work coexists with the charismatic rhythms. A rousing rock success from Zegovia, “Above the Roof & In the Tree” stirs in its role as a hard-rocking love letter to youth.
