“The Sparrow” is a dream-inspired, melancholic art-rock standout from Arn-Identified Flying Objects and Alien Friends, one of many highlights from the album The King and the Sparrow, also released today. Blending nostalgic piano, church bells, and mellotron, the track explores personal uncertainty through a dying bird’s struggle.
A strong melodic pull shines throughout the track, dazzling in its nostalgic piano-touched twinkling, twangy guitar warmth, and steady bass undercurrents. “I once saw a little sparrow dying, I could feel a heartbeat…” visceral lyricism and harmonious vocals let out, expanding thereafter from more intriguing, subdued instrumentation into a frolicking art-rock brightness. The shifts between the “I once saw…” introspections and more rousing “might have been an illusion” vibrancy is seamlessly accomplished, with the “reaching out for me” drive into the “fly sparrow fly” hook being especially resonant.
A brief yet lovely guitar solo intermingles with the piano work around 01:40 for further entrancement, then gearing into a second half that delights in its impactful vocal work — pairing the “fly sparrow fly” backing harmonious sentiments with the lead vocals’ contemplations on personal uncertainty and the equivalence of the dying sparrow to the narrator/songwriter himself. “The Sparrow” is another artful, melodically memorable standout from Arn-Identified Flying Objects and Alien Friends, a project from the former guitarist and singer in the Swedish band REDMOON, that continues to impress, such as on past featured cuts like “Summer’s Gate” and “Vagnar av guld.”
