Bryan Hill & the Layabouts – “Tour of the Universe”

“Tour of the Universe” touts a memorably expansive rock soundscape from Albuquerque-based act Bryan Hill & the Layabouts. The project’s fifth single navigates an introspective journey amidst spacey synths, stirring vocals, and dynamic guitar tones — resulting in an enjoyably replay-inducing sound.

Showing no shortage of atmosphere in its stylish introduction, “Tour of the Universe” gets underway with murky bass tones and steady percussion evolving into a hazy synth-laden entrancement. “There’s one of me, there’s two of me, there’s three of me waiting in the shadows,” a solemn vocal intrigue emerges, melding with twanging guitar lines and pulsing psych-ready energy. A multi-layered vocal soaring, letting out that “it’s not the end” and to “take it slow,” envelops as the mixture of funky guitar licks and moody bass bounces persist to thoroughly captivate.

The track’s midpoint consumes particularly in its evolution from free-flowing guitar fervor into a melodic vocal beckoning to “let it go.” Glistening guitars and nocturnal distortion then maneuver into spacey synth tones, which interact seamlessly with the escalating guitars — culminating in a gripping solo around the 02:30 mark. A serenely impactful vocal push, with a final “take it slow” urging, then caps off the track as the magnetic guitar work continues. “Tour of the Universe” is a standout production from Bryan Hill & the Layabouts.

“Tour of the Universe” and other tracks featured this month can be streamed on the updating Obscure Sound’s ‘Emerging Singles’ Spotify playlist.
