DrewJam – “Under the surface”

“Under the Surface” is an introspectively lush rock single from UK artist DrewJam, melding memorable guitar progressions with brightly enamoring piano touches and enveloping vocal harmonies. The production balances melodic approachability with personal themes, touching on emotional depth, perception, and vulnerability. Crafted through combined home and studio sessions, the sound showcases a deft balance between energetic momentum and reflective songwriting.

Dreamy guitar twangs immerse as the track gets underway, complemented by a warming, steady rhythm section as DrewJam’s lush vocal introspection emerges. “Deep down under the surface, all the things that should be free,” his singing emanates with subtle yet soulful backing reflections, culminating in the impactful “under the surface of your mind” punctuation. “What will you find?” the vocals persist alongside the mellowly effective guitar-led production, simultaneously approachable and emotively heartfelt.

“Can you survive?” a serenely stirring delivery continues during an especially magnetic sequence, emphasizing gorgeous backing harmonies past the three-minute turn. “These eyes still fill with tears,” lyricism exudes a compelling vulnerability, with that free-flowing emotion echoed in the lead’s presence — showing tonal shades of The Blue Nile’s Paul Buchanan. Reassuring “it’s all right” vocal sentiments linger into the satiating conclusion. Achieving a laid-back singer-songwriter aesthetic amidst heart-on-sleeve sentiments of memory and perception, “Under the surface” is a standout success from DrewJam.
