A compelling new EP from Yorkshire-based Les Gillon & The Agents Of Karma, After Party Sunrise radiates a cinematic folk-pop elegance. With tracks ranging from Shakespearian updates to scenic depictions of an afterparty following personal storms, the collection finds beauty in post-crisis tranquility and the shared strength of companionship, love, and art.
The EP’s title track enchants with serene acoustic strums and dreamy piano, gradually bolstered by heartfelt strings as stirring vocal introspection describes the “after party” — celebrating the passage of the bustle and tumult in one’s life. The initial “paid their bill, and packed their cases” sense of finality crafts rich, affecting imagery of this memorable, metaphorical setting. “No disguise, there will be no lies, in the after party sunrise,” layered vocals emanate, jubilant and perseverant thematically in tracing the calm after hardship.
The impactful “Goodbye MacBeth” arrives next, providing an updating of the Shakespearean tragedy through an affecting modern setting. Shades of The Go-Betweens show, fondly, in the strings and debonair yet descriptive vocal tone. “This Is A Ride” continues the dashing use of strings, here apparent immediately and throughout lyrical perspectives of human existence and its overall strangeness; its title-touting hook is especially resonant in its passionate strings and vocal pushes. EP finale “What Are You Like?” delights as well, cherishing good company and the power of love. Full of good vibes, After Party Sunrise is a lovely, melodic success of an EP from Les Gillon & The Agents Of Karma.
