Anna Thoresen – “GROUNDHOG DAY”

An atmospheric, melodic alt-pop success, “GROUNDHOG DAY” showcases Los Angeles-based artist Anna Thoresen navigating emotional stagnation within a climactic sound, echoing the exhausting, repetitive nature of an unraveling headspace.

Thoresen says of the track: “I moved to LA and was super lonely and depressed, and I kept noticing all of these patterns that kept repeating in my life in work or relationships where things just weren’t working out for me. I was so sad about it, so I wrote what I consider my “death march”, GROUNDHOG DAY.”

Thoresen’s enthralling vocal presence opens the production, letting out “I’ve been here before” with quivering, introspective allure. “Thought I knew better, now I’m not sure,” she continues with vulnerable chilliness, met thereafter by colorful trickling and escalating vocal soulfulness. Gentle acoustic strums, warming bass pulses, and breezy glistening bolster the haunting vocal layers, moving past the two-minute mark into the lead’s re-emerging “I don’t mean to be a pessimist, but I just feel so stuck.” Lyrical themes within the track consistently depict a sense of one floating adrift, succumbing to bad habits and disappointment, repeating like a “groundhog day.”

“I’m so tired of the sound,” Thoresen’s vocals captivate during an especially magnetic sequence, around the four-minute mark. A delectably eerie mixture of acoustics and subdued vocals swells into a delightful “around and around…” refrain, then maneuvering into a fantastic “there has to be another way” vocal burst of hope in the track’s riveting finale. “GROUNDHOG DAY” is a masterful production and piece of songwriting from Anna Thoresen.
