Gejo – “Callous”

“Callous” is a dynamic folk single from Utah singer-songwriter Gejo. Produced by Nate Pyfer for the upcoming album Quilted (out on June 5th), the track begins as a steady, acoustic-led piece before blossoming into a vibrant, effervescent expanse. It trades initial folk stillness for a driving, anthemic momentum to capture the disorienting wreckage of human suffering.

Developing gorgeously from sporadic acoustic warmth to a more frolicking vibrancy, “Callous” delights initially with subdued vocal introspection. “I couldn’t find a single thing,” his vocals let out, exuding a sense of soul-searching as trickling acoustics lend a brightly magnetic element. “I was so unsure, I let myself get pushed around,” the vocals then stir into a soaring passion, with pitter-pattering percussion and continued guitar flourishes complementing a lyrical depiction of human emotions, from feeling like a pushover to biter retrospection, conveyed in the “blood is on your own hands” moody refrain.

Another beautiful section shows crossing the two-minute turn, traversing from serene acoustics to the “get pushed around” uptick in perky guitars and chipper rhythms. The final minute dazzles in its overlapping vocal enthusiasm and melodically layered instrumentation, successfully developing from quainter folk beginnings to an anthemic, colorful expanse of pop and rock elements. “Callous” is an affecting, standout piece of songwriting from Gejo.
