Layering dreamy synths and captivating guitar work alongside themes of personal survival, historical memory, and defiance against adversity, Our Lady of the Sad Adventure is the dynamic fifth album from Boston-based artist Leah Callahan. The eclectic release aesthetically spans ’60s psychedelia, ’90s Madchester grooves, rock-inclined baroque-pop, and beyond.
An enthralling opener, “Fall in Love with your Mind” builds from an initial chiming intrigue to deeply resonant guitar work, achieving a mixture of twangy emotion and jangly shimmering. Callahan’s suavely introspective vocals emerge seamlessly, culminating in a memorable “let’s change the mood from mad to madness” refrain. Dynamic vocals here span from woozy backing complements to a compellingly suave lead. The lyrical themes stir, capturing a haunting portrait of past eras. The track layers ’60s psychedelia with ’90s Madchester nostalgia, channeling a threatening undercurrent against nostalgic reflections of unsettling, drug-hazed bygone days.
The rest of the album doesn’t let up in its immersive songwriting. Amongst the many standouts, “Devil May Care” melds blaring guitar passion with heartrending themes of victimhood and defiance; Callahan wrote the track after reading accounts from victims of abuse, pinpointing the prevalence of the world’s evils, and those who are “cool and sadistic.” Elsewhere, “About You” hypnotizes with its trickling guitar and driving rhythmic flair, playing as a thank-you to a supportive Colorado-based DJ. “Miss Me” is another stunner, delighting in its melancholic strings and brisker guitar movements, for a lovely hybrid of baroque-pop and fervent rock. Our Lady of the Sad Adventure represents another definitive full-length success from Leah Callahan, who previously caught our ears with 2024 album Curious Tourist.
