A chillingly urgent blend of shadowy rock, “Living A Lie” is a gripping new single from Brisbane-based project Mark’s Paranormal Dysneyland. The track captures a stark, politically charged unease, directly confronting ICE and growing authoritarian threats through a deeply arresting sonic lens. Specifically, the release commemorates the tragic ICE killings of Renee Good and Alex Pretti.
Simmering guitar distortion and moody piano traverse atmospherically as the track gets underway, then met by a decisive vocal presence that lets out “got my finger on the trigger, I’m looking down the line.” Its debonair, eerie quality struts a psychedelic foreboding, with hints of Syd Barrett. “I’m sure they have a family, their death will suit me fine,” the lyrical disposition outputs a menacing, psychotic quality — reflective of those who simply take orders without regard for others’ well-being, and how dehumanization is rampant in the enforcement of such immigration policies, to the point where death and torture are minimized.
Clanging piano and “I’ll make your life a misery” vocal declarations compel around midpoint, then moving into warbly electric guitar tones and percussive pitter-patter. Slight touches of piano usher in a re-emerging of the vocals, its “looking down the scope” and “I dehumanize my victims” lyricism continuing to stir with their dark, visceral cautions. The shifts between grimier introspection and “drunk on white supremacy” piano-struck ardor make for a resonating listening experience, thematically relevant and poignant alongside the artful rock pace.
