Impactful in its emotionally resonant and climactic sound, Sunraker is the eponymous debut EP from Copenhagen-based alternative rock quartet Sunraker. Led by songwriter Sophus Alf, the release blends dark post-punk textures and atmospheric shoegaze with explosive, distorted guitars while thematically digging into the tumultuous, melancholic transition from youth into adulthood.
“Mad” opens the EP with a lovely late-night atmospheric intrigue, infusing jangling guitar solemnity with brooding vocal introspection. More fervent percussion and spacey synth envelopments bolster the mix thereafter, succeeding in a darkly invigorating alt-rock sound complete with theatrical vocal escalations and moody synth-touched infusions. The “cigarette” vocal soaring is especially powerful amidst the memorable guitar/synth interplay, resembling a heavier Wild Beasts in its ghostly vocal aspects that follow.
Following the opener, “Marshlands” weaves haunting vocal precision amidst a delectable build-up of eerie guitar lines and midpoint vocal howling ferocity; the intense vocal range and trickling guitar power captivate there, fondly reminiscent of a cross between The Mars Volta and A Perfect Circle. The brief yet effective “Sun” is another standout with its psychedelic guitar jangling and reverbed glow, while EP finale “Sunraker” channels a steadier tonal ardor in its sweltering alt-rock sound, capped off by a scorching-hot guitar solo that coexists with the wonderfully frenzied vocal spiritedness. Sunraker’s eponymous EP is a thorough success, marveling with both its contemplative build-ups and passionate rock swells.
