A vibrant collision of stylish guitars and hooky, climactic vocals, “Tightrope” is an excellent showcase of the organic, live-recorded energy anchoring TIME TO TALK, the standout new album from North Carolina outfit Whoop. Driven by charismatic frontwoman Fal, the track brilliantly leans into a New Wave-inspired tension, fluidly shifting textures to deliver an intensely memorable, human-first rock experience.
A dynamic tonal flair appears immediately, navigating from pulsing guitar heaviness to a twangier, breezy charm. “Open up inside, see what you will find,” Fal’s vocals consume, fondly reminiscent of Metric in the ascent from suave, bass-friendly verses into a more anthemic eruption. “You’re walking on a tightrope,” the vocals let out, magnetic in that refrain as swooning backing vocal harmonies pair with the escalated title-bearing proclamation. Fal’s vocal layers excel in overlapping debonair and excitable deliveries, both full of momentum.
The track’s final minute then invigorates with a fervent guitar-laden appeal, reminiscent of the thumping opening. Fal’s “walking on…” vocal captivation lingers seamlessly alongside, punctuated by further compelling backing vocal harmonies and a shift to the jangly guitar tones. “Tightrope” is a stylish, replay-inducing rock success from Whoop, one of many highlights from their new album TIME TO TALK.
