Australian multi-instrumentalist Dan Webb outputs an ambitious jazz-rock fusion anthem on “Hungry Ghosts.” Inspired by Singapore’s Hungry Ghost Festival, the track explores themes of transformation and displacement through an eclectic, psychedelic soundscape. Webb anchors a driving synth bassline beneath an extraordinary international lineup featuring Clive Deamer (Radiohead), Dennis Hamm (Thundercat), and Bob Lanzetti (Snarky Puppy), culminating in a vibrant instrumental journey packed with adventurous improvisation.
A jazzy, vibrant percussive presence opens the track in riveting form, steadily giving way to a warming, hypnotic bass presence and spacey backing shimmering. Psychedelic electric guitar infusions frolic with free-flowing vigor thereafter, seamlessly melding with the heady rhythm section for an otherworldly, ambitious soundscape. Jam-friendly keys traverse with delectably hazy appeal as the percussion continues with fervent pitter-pattering, with roaring guitar lines re-appearing just prior to the two-minute turn.
The concluding guitar solo invigorates with its crisply illuminated feeling, cohesively building from the preceding array of psychedelic keys. Enthralling from its percussive-minded introduction to the guitar-laden theatrics in the second half, “Hungry Ghosts” is a fantastic release from Dan Webb, joined by the very talented cast of drummer Clive Deamer (Radiohead, Portishead), keyboardist Dennis Hamm (Thundercat) and guitarist Bob Lanzetti (Snarky Puppy). They all collaborate for a deeply memorable standout here.
