Die Feen – “Here Comes The King”

Washington, DC-based artist Die Feen crafts a darkly memorable sound on new single “Here Comes The King,” finding a compelling middle ground between nocturnal post-punk steadiness and synth-touched effervescence. The project’s first batch of songs are described as capturing “an ongoing story about an American diplomat’s life from the late 70s – (probably) the late 80s” — with a summary of the story so far found on their Instagram‘s pinned reels.

A solemn synth undercurrent assumes a bass-y post-punk role right away amidst panting percussion, resembling a blend of Joy Division and John Maus, the latter apparent in the nonchalant vocal tone. Glistening synths whir throughout and dazzle alongside backing vocal layers, culminating in an impactful title-bearing proclamation and “and that power is what we are here to reclaim” spoken-word insertion. “Here Comes The King” is an impactful, stylishly dark success from Die Feen.

This and other tracks featured this month can be streamed on the updating Obscure Sound’s ‘Emerging Singles’ Spotify playlist.
