Fuji Gateway – “Last Movie We’ll Ever Run”

Asheville, NC-based artist Fuji Gateway ventures across dreamy psych-pop and escalating vocal passion on new single “Last Movie We’ll Ever Run,” described as “about being chronically stuck in your head.” It represents the project of multi-instrumentalist and singer-songwriter Steven Applegate, who elaborates further that the song captures how “sometimes everything can be going great around you but it feels so hard to just be there and take it in.”

Breezy guitar strums quickly expand into bouncy bass, electric guitar shimmering, and affecting vocals, embracing a heightened pitch and expressive demeanor with airy, infectious qualities. “These colors and lights are leaving me underwhelmed,” Applegate sings as jangly guitar tones enamor. The final minute also stands out with a fantastic guitar solo, free-flowing with charisma as the lusher jangling persists underneath.

The project caught our ears in prior years with excellent singles like “Tuesdays, Am I Right?” and “Arrive Late, Leave Early” — and “Last Movie We’ll Ever Run” definitively continues their knack for gripping songwriting and inventive atmospherics.

This and other tracks featured this month can be streamed on the updating Obscure Sound’s ‘Emerging Singles’ Spotify playlist.
