French project Notre Dame de la Colline, the solo output of Nancy-based artist Florian, stirs on “Le chant du fracas,” the closing track on his album Les Contes du Cyclone. “Le chant du fracas” opens with a spoken-word account of insomnia — “I can’t sleep, it drives me crazy” — and sporadic doses of keys, expanding from a singular note to multi-layered elegance. Lyrical ruminations on an anxious state of unknowing continue, admitting to anxiety in experiencing that waiting game, whether across daily life or love itself. The incorporation of ghostly, wordless backing harmonies adds a lovely mystique around the track’s midpoint. The keys rise and fall in their tonal pitch, maintaining a hypnotic grace in their general disposition as the choral textures swell into a somber, choir-like, spine-tingling arrangement as the three-minute mark approaches.
