Ruven – “Balenciaga Boots”

Propelled by a fantastic, dynamic display of art-pop, funk, and electronic R&B, “Balenciaga Boots” is a recent track from Ruven, the project of London-based, Virginia-born artist, songwriter, and producer Brian Parker. As he explains, the track started off as a joke “about the futility of fashion in the apocalypse — what if designer boots are just survival gear in a collapsing world?”

“I remember when you caught my eye,” Parker’s soulful vocals emanate alongside warbly synths, dreamy guitar swirls, and a funky bass throbbing. “This could be a blast, let’s celebrate,” his vocals continue into the riveting title-touting chorus, punctuated by a suavely impactful “I know you’d wear ’em too” proclamation. Apocalyptic lyrical descriptions ensue, as does a sense of perseverance in the “what if I do my little dance in the acid rain, in the acrid smoke…” allure, then gearing up into another delightful central hook. A catchy post-apocalyptic groover, “Balenciaga Boots” is a stunner from Ruven.

This and other tracks featured this month can be streamed on the updating Obscure Sound’s ‘Emerging Singles’ Spotify playlist.
