Recent single “The Society of The Spectacle (Annihilation Version)” finds Oxford/Basel experimental electronic project Bruno Muerte embracing a blend of techno, new wave, electroclash, and western influences. Remixed with Lee Switzer-Woolf, the track transforms the duo’s mechanical rhythms, distorted guitars, and retro synths into an eclectic, club-oriented experience.
A riveting, dynamic soundscape is on display throughout. The first minute fully embraces an atmospheric electronic realm, moving from electro-friendly rhythmic maneuvers to late-night synthwave prowess, echoed in both the effervescent lead and rumbling undercurrents; it’s easy to envision driving past neon lights through the darkness as the song plays. “Saw right through the bedroom wall,” a solemn lead voice emerges thereafter, playing seamlessly amidst ongoing synth buzzes alongside a glistening, dreamy guitar. A return to the vibrant synth line ensues, matching with an expressive vocal ascent for a clear sense of momentum.
“I work through my paranoia,” the lead voice delivers during an especially memorable sequence, followed by spacey synth arpeggios that culminate in a buzzy, bass-heavy ardor. The shifts in this final minute between spaciously nocturnal intrigue and glimmering infectiousness play excellently, with the illuminated singing combining well there with distorted guitar ardor before a gripping finale with airy, haunting synth elements. “The Society of the Spectacle (Annihilation Version)” provides a fantastic, vibey listening experience from Bruno Muerte.
