Rock, jazz, folk, and blues influences converge gorgeously in Honey VHS‘ “Blue Eyes, Sunshine,” a soulful highlight from the Brooklyn band’s debut album With Pulp. Recorded live in full takes, the track reflects the group’s impressive musicianship, with singer-songwriter Cameron Roberts and guitarist Luca Moneti Schliemann leading alongside a lineup comprising Jasper Grigsby-Schulte on bass, Joe Bailey on guitar, and Pele Greenberg on drums.
The bass work proves particularly magnetic throughout, and it’s apparent right away in melding an infectious line with mellow, jazzy guitars. “Southern night sky, in his soft eyes,” Roberts’ vocals delivers with soulful depth, expanding into a multi-layered coolness as additional psychedelic guitar tones and panting percussive injections assemble for a lovely hook, just prior to the one-minute turn. “Don’t hide in plain sight,” Roberts continues, delectably moody in the verses and seamless in the shift to the “spring bloom, no shoes” expanse, where serene piano adds to the mix.
Just before the final minute, an especially tender interplay between lush guitar wails and dreamy piano reveals itself. The instrumentation here is riveting, taking the lead as Roberts’ voice becomes momentarily absent, before re-emerging during a tasteful, satisfying send-off. Smitten lyrical allure and smoky, soulful singing build toward a final “spring bloom” harmonious vocal presence, touched by delicate piano. “Blue Eyes, Sunshine” is a fully absorbing, soulful pop standout from Honey VHS.
