A melodic fusion of shoegaze, indie rock, and noise-pop textures, Angers, France-based project OpusKan impresses on debut album rendez-Vous. Spanning 16 tracks, the release balances emotionally resonant songwriting with a creative process that began as intimate guitar-and-vocal compositions before expanding into fuller arrangements.
“Invitation” is a stylishly dynamic album opener, expanding from charismatic guitar work and dreamy backing vocal harmonies to a suavely confident lead. “And my heart’s dust, I know,” these vocals navigate into further guitar pulsations and a brassy, vibrant feeling. The result is an anthemic tour-de-force that makes a strong impression despite a concise runtime. “Ember of Us” arrives next with a moodier guitar disposition, its hazy twangs and spine-tingling vocal emotion reminding fondly of early Radiohead. “Ancient shadows, softly creeping,” the vocals progress amidst atmospheric guitars, then ascending seamlessly into bursts of heavier guitar fervor.
Another standout track, “Basement” is an exceptionally punchy rock success, unveiling sweltering vocal ardor that reminds fondly of The Walkmen. “You been calling me my best friend,” the vocals swelter falling a title-referencing initial refrain, then swapping vocal leads and overall tone, spanning from the “music is my home” climactic arrival to whirring guitar energy to more understated moments; it’s exemplary of the project’s dynamic prowess. Album finale “Vespers” is another gem, fusing alt-rock flair and shoegaze-y textures, for guitar work reminding fondly of Wolf Alice. Its mixture of soaring guitar work and gauzy warmth pairs with memorable vocals for a tour-de-force of a finale, putting to a close a fantastic full-length from OpusKan.
