Peter Xifaras and the Czech National Symphony Orchestra bring a fresh orchestral dimension to Suite Lady Greensleeves, reimagining the centuries-old “Greensleeves” melody through themes of unrequited love. Xifaras’ award-winning work spans composition, guitar, and production, with previous orchestral projects earning international recognition and charting on Billboard’s Classical and Crossover charts. Xifaras’ penchant for dynamic, momentum-filled compositions is on display right away with “Prologue,” which shifts seamlessly between simmering strings and grander bursts of ardor. The famous melody to “Greensleeves” emerges within this emotively compelling production, bringing a melodic direction that flourishes in both subdued folk arrangements and sweeping orchestral fervor. Ensuing track “Meet and Greet” tugs at the heart with a more cinematic-feeling arrangement of strings, expanding from contemplative, soaring lines to dexterous flurries, again emphasizing a talent to shift between lushness and expression.
The magnetic sound continues from there, particularly with the elegant “Love From Afar,” a heartrending track whose layers of strings recall Ryuichi Sakamoto’s orchestral material. Elsewhere, “The Pursuit” carries a similar tonal disposition initially, further exemplifying the orchestra’s eclectic capacity, particularly in infusing the melody to “Greensleeves” around midpoint in both serene and escalating tonal qualities, while the aptly titled “Unrequited Love” exudes a somber entrancement. Suite Lady Greensleeves is a gorgeous release from Peter Xifaras and the Czech National Symphony Orchestra, putting an alluring orchestral-forward spin on the classic song.
