The Dorado Experiment’s fantastic single “Doors” captures the Whakatū Nelson psychedelic rock band’s improvisational spirit through surging guitars, dynamic vocals, and dramatic rhythmic shifts. Formed in 2024, the New Zealand group draws from classic rock, psychedelia, and jam-band traditions, bringing the spontaneity and audience connection of their widely acclaimed live performances into the studio with debut album Becoming A Man.
Simmering snares and ambient soundscapes resembling howling wind set “Doors” into motion with cinematic flair. Moody, lush guitar work eases in with an alt-rock blissfulness, echoing Siamese Dream-era Pumpkins in its hypnotic tone. “Bathe me in the river, wash away the time,” a delectably lulling harmonic layering unveils thereafter, expanding gradually in emotion and clarity as the surrounding instrumentation does the same. A soaring lead presence approaches the three-minute mark with lovely momentum, meeting a steadier rhythmic presence as the twanging, expressive guitars persist amidst dynamic vocal allure.
The “something’s shining through” catharsis invigorates around the track’s midpoint, arriving into a heavy dose of distortion and frantic rhythms as the “nothing to lose” lead delivery surges with energy. The second half of the track then dizzies with its overall ardor and theatrical art-rock pull, showing consuming shades of black midi in the alternations between dramatically fervent delivery and unbridled guitar work.
