The Heat Inc. – “Mind Control”

London-based act The Heat Inc. releases “Mind Control,” a rousing rock success with excellently dynamic lead work. The track frames a dark, carnival-like tour of past relationships, pairing a driving post-punk rhythm section with theatrical frontman delivery and heavy, distorted guitar work. The four-piece comprises vocalist Jon Dodd, guitarist Marco Simoncelli, bassist Nico Rigot, and drummer Maurizio Vitale.

A resonant opening of feedback-friendly guitars quickly swells into a thumping, distortion-heavy vigor. “Come one and all, the heart’s last tour leaves no room for fettered saints,” a debonair voice intones, met by a clanging post-punk bass line and panting percussion. The ensuing “mind control” bridge continues the palpable sense of momentum before resolving into a delectable chorus that pairs steady, pulsing distorted guitars with a magnetic central croon, reminiscent of a cross between Alex Turner and David Bowie.

“Ladies check your engines, arm your breath with vest,” the stirring delivery commences during the final chorus, driving into a suave “I can’t love another” declaration and gleeful, ghostly backing harmonies easing in with sporadic, artful appeal. The higher-pitched choral backing pairs with Dodd’s fervent lead performance and melodic guitar power for another delectable sequence; it is one of many throughout “Mind Control,” a surefire winner of a track from The Heat Inc.
