Denmark-based act Wingfish looks across 23 years of musical history on new album Dyads, bringing together new studio recordings, a reworked older song, and live performances. The album also points toward the band’s future as a trio, with Jesper joined by his son Johan on guitar and backing vocals, while maintaining a core rock identity that ventures across varied stylistic territory.
The album kickstarts with two brand new tracks in “Gentle Ally” and “Sacred Place.” The former pushes forth on jangling, subdued guitars and steady percussion, leading to a vocal entrance as Jesper sings, “I’ve been speaking in tongues.” A thematic sense of personal displacement and soul-searching is furthered in the “I live a sorry man’s life” vulnerability, beckoning for brighter days as the sludgy guitar work expands into a thicker reverberation past the five-minute turn. This riveting track then flows into “Sacred Place,” more expressive in its melodic elongation and warmly distorted guitar work, unveiling an especially charismatic performance shift past midpoint. Both tracks open the album with magnetic, moody rock allure.
The rest of the album proves equally consuming. A new version of “Blown” stirs in its no-frills rock appeal, expanding upon the original released on 2019 album Scout. Memorable live recordings comprise the remainder of the release. “100 Ways to Go” is especially riveting, tracing self-realizations amidst melodic phrasing and a wailing guitar solo, taking hold past the three-minute mark. “I’ve been searching for an easy way,” Jesper shines on another standout in “Bad Seeds,” where acoustic strums and electric guitars interplay beautifully. Dyads is a strong rock full-length from Wingfish.
