A resonant new track from Zach Montana, “Son” develops from acoustic-set introspection to soaring rock charisma. “Hold my breath, and count to three,” he sings initially over steady acoustic strums, escalating to a “was it lost just like time in an hourglass?” impassioned call that heightens the tonal emotion considerably.
The “over and over” refrain furthers that spine-tingling expressive ardor, assuming a Jeff Buckley-esque haunting character as elegant layers move in. The second half then enthralls with heavier electric guitar tones and persisting vocal theatrics, showing a delectably dizzying dynamic between initial folk subduedness and second-half rock invigoration. “Son” is a standout success from Zach Montana.
