Written as a love song to earth, Baldy Crawlers‘ “Waterfall Laughter (La Tierra Ríe en Cascadas)” serves as the pivotal second chapter of their forthcoming album Fais Toi Plaisir. Following up the previously featured “Hatred?” this new track pairs a bilingual vocal performance with a Latin-folk foundation. Recorded at the foot of Mount Baldy, the track features musicians from Latin jazz and other backgrounds alongside guitars built by founder Martin Maudal.
A gorgeous array of soft acoustics and heartfelt twangs open the track, complemented by soothing wordless harmonic blending and lush piano. The serenely inviting beginning ventures into a caressing lead presence, lyrically poetic in depicting an adoration for Mother Earth: “Waterfall Laughter, kaleidoscope eyes, lightning flies from her fingers.” A smitten, soaring sense ensues as Norrell Thompson’s riveting lead delivery continues, delighting in the more emotive, elongated “loving her takes me away” line.
The three-minute turn is especially striking in its jazzy piano work and bossa-nova rhythmic resemblances, complemented by Spanish-language phrasing that shifts between soulful singing and spoken-word intrigue. These harmonic layers overlap cohesively as twangy guitar tones meld with the playful rhythms and prancing piano, exuding a naturally flowing charisma reflective of mother nature’s push and pulls.
