Exploring the seductive fantasy of leaving a stagnant life behind, new single “Leave It All Behind” finds Phoenix-based composer and painter Allan Jamisen reflecting on escape, reinvention, and the difficult reality of carrying the past wherever you go. The road-trip-inspired single emerged from a period of profound isolation and self-reflection, ultimately transforming the desire to simply drive away into something more introspective and emotionally resonant.
Crafting a sound steeped in moody rock, sophisti-pop refinement, and atmospheric allure, the track opens with haunting acoustics, joined by additional prancing layers as pulsing bass, percussion, and electric guitar further the soundscape-laden resonance. “Here she comes, chasing electric dreams,” Jamisen opens with debonair allure. “We’re leaving here together tonight,” he beckons thereafter, with twangy guitars and moody synths driving into an affecting “leave it all behind” hook, joined by a lush female backing vocal harmony attaining soulful fervency and seamlessly intertwining with Jamisen’s more solemn entrancement. The string-touched “taking the high road” segment thereafter continues to delight in the moody rock artistry, balancing sophistication with alternative textures. Atmospheric and emotively gripping, the track soundtracks an alluring impulse toward escape while retaining a more introspective undercurrent.
At its essence, “Leave It All Behind” is a road trip song, built around the universal desire to break free from a dead-end situation. The lyrics immerse themselves in the nightlife and the possibility of impulsive departure, introducing a woman who is “the center of attention tonight” before turning toward the prospect of leaving together. “Life is a dance / So there’s always a chance” leads into the song’s central refrain, while the subsequent “Taking the high road / Far away” passage captures the exhilaration of imagining somewhere, and something, entirely different.
The song began during the pandemic, when the shutdown of everyday life provided Jamisen with an opportunity for deeper self-reflection. For him, this period of isolation followed an already lengthy and difficult experience as a caregiver for a terminally ill parent. The aftermath of their death was socially isolating as well, and in the years preceding the pandemic, Jamisen felt as though he was living in a void, disconnected and disoriented. Reemerging into the rhythm of life became a monumental struggle, giving the song’s yearning for movement and renewed experience a deeply personal foundation.

That context also informs the song’s nightlife perspective. Rather than portraying escape solely as physical departure, “Leave It All Behind” considers the appeal of reconnecting with other people, discovering romantic possibility, and imagining a different version of one’s life. The lyrics’ imagery of “Heartbreak Street,” “Electric dreams,” and following a sign “Until you reach the end of time” gives that fantasy a cinematic quality, as though simply getting in the car and heading somewhere else could make everything that came before disappear.
The idea is deeply relatable in its many possible forms: leaving bad memories, a broken relationship, dysfunctional family dynamics, or a thankless job in the hope of finding something, or someone, more worthwhile. Yet the song also recognizes the limitation beneath that fantasy. No matter how appealing it may be to put everything in the rearview mirror and begin again somewhere else, the past cannot simply be outrun. That tension gives the repeated “leave it all behind” refrain its emotional weight, simultaneously expressing liberation and uncertainty.
“Leave It All Behind” was produced with renowned Los Angeles recording engineer and producer John X Volaitis, whose credits include work with the Rolling Stones, Tracy Chapman, Bonnie Raitt, Whitesnake, and Michael Hutchence of INXS. His production complements Jamisen’s atmospheric vision, allowing the track’s acoustic warmth, twangy guitars, moody synths, soulful vocal harmonies, and rhythmic momentum to coexist with its more reflective qualities. Ultimately, “Leave It All Behind” captures the intoxicating dream of driving toward a new existence while acknowledging the unavoidable truth beneath it: no matter where you go, there you are.
