Prince Jelleh – “First Fall”

Swiss band Prince Jelleh conveys the fragile aftermath of heartbreak on “First Fall,” a melancholic folk/rock offering that pairs intimate lyricism with gently unfolding guitar work and atmospheric harmonies. Produced by Tillmann Ostendarp, the single balances autumnal introspection with a glimmer of hope ahead of the band’s upcoming EP Not the Dawn, out November 20. The track is described as “a quiet, honest song about the days after a breakup, when the feeling is almost too much to bear.”

Tender guitars and mellow keys complement an initial lead yearning, letting out: “My leaves have fallen and I wish I had more clothes on, or somebody, somebody I could hold onto.” A pulsing rhythmic presence ensues, while lyrical admissions of shame and a desire to “skip to next spring” further themes of seasonal-like change, or at least the hope for it. Moody guitar trickles and twangs lead the subsequent section, haunting and emotive in its art-folk and rock disposition, as ghostly, wordless backing harmonies inject with spine-tingling allure.

The production’s second half captivates in its layered sophistication, weaving gentle guitar twangs, lush acoustics, and a head-nodding rhythmic warmth. “Oh fall, don’t let me fall with you,” the delivery continues to excel, fondly reminiscent of Grizzly Bear in the chilly backing harmonies and poetic lyrical edge. A brass-fronted bridge envelops into the final 30 seconds, where twangy guitar hypnotics traverse into a wholly satiating send-off. Imagery of falling leaves and personal erosion proves apt within a wonderfully developing art-rock feeling, making “First Fall” a resonant success from Prince Jelleh.
