Tara Van – “Miles On It”

“Miles On It” captures the collaborative chemistry of Toronto-based singer-songwriter Tara Van and Mark Calderone, pairing lush guitar and atmospheric production with a reflective meditation on nostalgia, impermanence, and appreciating the experiences that shape us. Recorded at Calderone’s now-defunct Apt Sea studio, the track gives Van’s soulful delivery a serene, spacious setting.

“It’s hard to see you go,” Tara Van’s lead opens with spacious allure, quickly complemented by lush acoustic strums and a steady rhythm section. “This world is sink or swim,” her delivery resonates, reflecting on the world’s tumult while celebrating past experiences, embracing nostalgia as a source of warm reflection rather than something to wallow in with retrospective yearning. Mark Calderone’s guitar work delights throughout with its melodic, serene backing, blissfully accompanying Tara Van’s suavely introspective phrasing allure. “We put some miles on it,” she stirs during the chorus, bolstered by especially gorgeous dreamy guitar tones past the two-minute turn.

Tara Van’s lead assumes a more submerged, understated quality in the “I could have…” aspirations within the ensuing segment, culminating thereafter into another memorable title-touting refrain. The reflection of “putting some miles on it” frames past experiences and relationships as a source of learning and embracing the human experience, even as the closing line acknowledges that these times — whether good or bad — “don’t last.” A carpe-diem sentiment appears enjoyably, as a result. “Miles On It” is a consuming success of a track from Tara Van.
