“Beautiful Lie” showcases London five-piece The Horn’s flair for cinematic grandeur and melodic British indie sensibilities, pairing Jonny Taylor’s expressive delivery with shimmering guitars, dreamy synths, and soaring strings. Its richly layered chamber-pop glow reflects the band’s heartfelt approach ahead of their sophomore album, Catalyst.
The track’s production is gorgeously dynamic and emotive, delighting in its range of instrumentation, from trickling guitars to heartrending strings, amidst a harmoniously melodic lead presence. Hazy synths give way to those memorable guitar trickles and bouncy bass line, aesthetically reminiscent of Wild Beasts, while Jonny Taylor’s delivery emerges with smooth vulnerabilities. “I’ve been chasing my own shadows all over town,” he lets out just prior to the beautiful string emergence. “You were falling down, and no one else was around,” his performance continues, gearing up into a lovely chorus.
Glistening keys and a soaring lead entrancement glide into the “such a beautiful lie” line in this fantastic chorus, inducing replays in its stirring harmonic ascent and chamber-pop stylings. Twinkling guitars and a small touch of synths then lead back into the ensuing verses, eventually leading into another memorable interplay between strings, keys, and guitars. An utterly absorbing showcase in songwriting and production, cinematic in its orchestral glow and harmonious delivery, “Beautiful Lie” is an impressive release from The Horn.
