The Sound of Mountains – “Jacob’s Ladder” + “Salt”

The Sound of Mountains builds an enthralling post-rock sound throughout the new album Jacob’s Ladder, showcasing the impressive songwriting and musicianship of Christopher Morin, originally from upstate New York and now based in Southern California.

As he explains: “The Sound of Mountains evolved from trying to decide between soul-soothing campfire type songs or the more full-band post-rock vibe, both which are very much alive within me. In choosing not to limit myself, TSOM sets out to accomplish both while still remaining cohesive.”

The album overall showcases that dynamic reach, especially exemplary in its epic title track and stirring finale “Salt.” The former is a beautifully sprawling standout, running over ten minutes. Initially forlorn guitar trickles and balmy woodwinds grow with emotive momentum, especially striking in a midpoint key change as the bursting rock stylishness continues. Its distortion-heavy second half invigorates, as well, while album finale “Salt” casts a more elegant glow in its dreamy piano and heartrending strings. Both are exemplary of the album’s high-quality songwriting and performances from The Sound of Mountains.
