whywhy – “Fear of Missing Out”

whywhy, the project of Basel, Switzerland-based songwriter Guy Ratnitsky, captures the uneasy tension between living in the present and chasing future aspirations on jangly single “Fear of Missing Out.” Written, performed, and produced by Ratnitsky, the track pairs melancholic guitar textures with an atmospheric approach steeped in nostalgia.

The track builds with delectably moody momentum throughout. Suave guitar twangs and a hypnotic percussive pit-patter move into a jangling warmth. “Look at this waterfall, it looks so wonderful, like a black and white movie,” Ratnitsky’s lead presence emerges with debonair entrancement, tonally reminiscent of Felt. The escalated “voices in your head” performance segment compels further, adding a touch of more emotion as jangly guitars continue to maneuver with late-night atmospheric allure. The ensuing verses, striving to “find a way to stop the clocks from ticking,” are palpable in their ongoing momentum as well.

The final minute is especially exemplary of the alluring guitar work within, understated in its jangly disposition though maintaining a melodic power in the intertwining between steady chords and flickering twangs. The delivery’s absence in that final minute lends a spotlight to the guitar presence, which concludes “Fear of Missing Out” with blissfully satiating appeal. “Fear of Missing Out” is a nocturnal-friendly jangly rock success from whywhy.
