Leon Ampersand – “I Used To Be Cool”

/

Vermont-based artist Leon Ampersand thoroughly impresses with the track “I Used To Be Cool.” The murky, retrospective tone reminds fondly of Cass McCombs initially. A bouncier, illuminated allure comes after the one-minute mark, with lingering guitar around 01:35 adding gorgeously to the soundscape. There’s a feeling of accepting transformation, albeit with a suave shrug, and aptly accompanied by a growth from contemplative verses into guitar-laden textural additions. “I Used To Be Cool” firmly captivates.

Of the track, the artist writes: “This is a song about pushing 40 and realizing one day that the things you thought were so cool are no longer – your clothes, your musical tastes, your obsession with Frasier – so much so that when you look in the mirror one day all you see Principal Vernon. You’ve become the thing you always hated.”

“I Used To Be Cool” and other memorable tracks from this month can also be streamed on the updating Obscure Sound’s ‘Best of June 2020’ Spotify playlist.

The track is also featured in the genre-based, best-of Spotify compilation Emerging Indie Rock.
