Recently, I’ve become enamored with a track by psychedelic/funk/gospel outfit The Relatives, who released their comeback album The Electric Word earlier this year on Yep Roc. “Let Your Light Shine” is badass with a capital B, full of passion, big bold booming voices, and bursting brass, with a wonderful driving groove. The intensity of “Let Your Light Shine” works with heavy rhythm section and soulful vocals settling perfectly into the pocket. Does it break new ground? No, but that’s just fine by me. As if this song isn’t enough to make you feel good, then their story will. Originally formed in the early ’70s, The Relatives’ brand of sexy psychedelic-gospel funktasticness was too much for the little, conservative Texas town they were based out of. As a result, their music faded into obscurity. The Relatives’ re-emergence into the music world can only be seen as a good thing. I challenge anyone to not bob their head to this track!
