Hip-hop instrumentals meet alternative rock on “I Want” from West Texas quartet ANiMALSOUL. The disparate combination feels natural and refreshing here, primarily due to the group’s glistening knack for sensual, R&B-inspired hooks. Kaleidoscopic guitars and singer Jourdan Harper hypnotize over a smooth beat while drummer Valente Arellano has some notable hi-hat work behind the kit, resulting in an audibly caressing sound that is quite easy to become engaged in.

“I Want” feels divided into two movements. The first part is the main attraction, but around the 2:30 mark an entirely different piano instrumental drops in to carry the song out. When ANiMALSOUL outfits their funk with an electronic sheen, you can’t help but bob your head along with their mellow and entrancing beats.
