“Voicemail” is a success in every regard, from Khronos Beats’ pulsating, infectiously vintage production to RaneRaps’ intensely precise delivery, fondly reminiscent of André 3000 in tone and output. High-energy verses swell around the track’s central hook, where pleads of “just wish that you would talk to me” intermingle with even more amped-up vocals and clamoring rhythmic additions. There’s hints of Outkast here, and I’m loving it, though RaneRaps is certainly emerging as an individual success in his own right. RaneRaps, the project of Los Angeles-based CJ Hughes, is fast on the rise.
