Impressing previously with “In the End” and “Hangup Blues“, both captivating efforts with a bluesy organ-laden feel, Boston trio Wake Child pursue some exciting new stylistic developments on the recently released “Kathaleen”. Trickling, tropical-like guitars with an ’80s feel and concisely effective vocals, reminding distantly of Steely Dan with a more rock-laden contemporary edge. Suave and melodically stimulating, the track provides blissful listening for the first several minutes, transitioning into a guitar-focused solo throughout the three-minute mark that showcases the band’s stellar rock-leaning chops. The “wanna tell you that I love you now,” bridge that follows is wonderfully incorporated, helping lead to a hypnotic conclusion for my favorite Wake Child track to date.
