Mentalease – “Avert a Gaze”

/

Chicago trio Mentalease show a hypnotic form of psych-pop on successful new track “Avert a Gaze,” which focuses on “trying to make genuine connections in the age of the marketed self.” Touting a colorful and melodically forceful sound reminiscent of Animal Collective, the track features escalating vocals that alternate between fierce emotion and psych-friendly repetition. Percussion and keys mesh alongside atmospheric samples to construct a striking, successful effort. It’s a highlight from one of the more impressive EPs I’ve heard so far this year.

The track comes via the trio’s new Push a Button EP, streaming in full below:

“Avert a Gaze” and other memorable tracks from this month can also be streamed on the updating Obscure Sound’s ‘Best of January 2019’ Spotify playlist.

The track is also featured in the genre-based, best-of Spotify compilation Catchy Indie Pop.
