Afternoon Author – “Matchless”

Afternoon Author produce indie-electro from Phoenix, AZ. They’re currently recording an album, and will be releasing a new single every month until its release later this year. “Matchless” is the first of these singles, a strong showing that emphasizes Afternoon Author’s cohesion of downtempo and synth-pop. Citing acts like Tycho, Radiohead, Jamie XX, and Baths as influences, whose reminiscences are evident to some extent here, especially as the keys assume a more twinkling demeanor after 01:30. “Matchless” has me anticipating the singles leading up to the album, as well as the album itself.

“Matchless” and other memorable tracks from this month can also be streamed on the updating Obscure Sound’s ‘Best of February 2019’ Spotify playlist.

The track is also featured in the genre-based, best-of Spotify compilation Innovative Electronic Music.
