The dreamy “Honestly” is a lovely new track from Soft Wax, a Faversham-based production duo turned five-piece. Supremely melodic, the track rides initially on a lush bass line and laid-back vocals, following an ’80s synth tone that establishes the track’s initial aesthetic nicely. The two-minute mark brings some entrancing guitar twangs, which builds into a psych-friendly, spacey combination of a synth lead and underlying arpeggio. The vocals’ re-emergence shortly thereafter is wonderfully executed, the production reminding of Tame Impala’s latest. I’m greatly enjoying the aesthetic Soft Wax are showing here.
The band says the following about the track:
“Honestly” is a very personal song that compares the struggles of mental health to a haunting, and how the comfort of a particular person temporarily acts as a distraction device. Besides its personal meaning, it also marks a shift in musical direction towards a more defined style for the band. Everything was recorded by us in a bedroom.
