A hypnotic, swaying sound develops into a punchier rock vigor on “No More Guitars,” the latest track from GOLD ERIS. The artist also impressed last month with the track “Binary Dreams.” Both these standouts will appear on the upcoming full-length Annuals, out this September.
Harmonious, wordless vocals open the track amidst gentle guitars and slight rhythmic pitter-patter. A jazzy, sort of bossa-nova feeling ensues in the playful rhythms and jangling guitars, then venturing into the title-bearing vocal soulfulness: “No more guitars / No more sweetness / No more keys / I really mean it.” Pulsing guitars and an uptick in vocal enthusiasm follows, beckoning to “welcome and feel it” with punctuating charisma. Second-half strings also entice. The hooky, melodic production pairs with resonant themes, capturing the allure of stripping everything away to uncover and confront what’s left underneath. “No More Guitars is a song that imagines silence and subtraction as forms of relief. By rejecting guitars, sweetness, keys, vocals, songs, and even words, there is an effort to escape overstimulation and regain control, although the repetition of the song reveals the paradox of using music to argue for music’s disappearance. The song explores the desire to strip everything away—music, sweetness, noise, even comforting forms of expression—in order to confront what’s left underneath. The repeated demand of “No more guitars” isn’t necessarily an attack on music; it’s a plea for quiet after becoming emotionally saturated.”
