The Black City – “Wake Up. The Funk”

/

Italian funk collective The Black City recently released their new album Wake Up. The Funk, showcasing a band whose members have experience in everything from blues and rock to reggae and Latin folk. Those eclectic tendencies are audible, though at heart this is a rousing funk-forward album, exemplified by the album’s title track. “Wake Up. The Funk.” Funky guitar licks and suave, hypnotic vocals — initially acting more as a rhythmic force before a lead emerges — make for a smooth-flowing feel. The track has a fairly standard structure, though does well in establishing an accessible mold of funk that will entice new listeners into exploring the rest of the album, which can be streamed on Spotify here.

“Wake Up. The Funk” and other memorable tracks from this month can also be streamed on the updating Obscure Sound’s ‘Best of June 2019’ Spotify playlist.
